T.J.
T.J. is the son of the sharecropper who farms part of the Granger land which resides by the Logan land. He is not very strong but he wishes to be treated as a man. He wants to be worth something in a society where his color makes him second class. He likes to feel important, a characteristic played in the beginning story when he visits the Logans with news he thinks they have not yet received and makes a major project out of the telling. He tries to act powerful by teasing the younger children and by trying to talk them into things their parents have forbidden.
Uncle Hammer
Not much is known about Hammer. He has come from a few towns over driving a nice car like Mr.Grangers. He bought it because he believes black people should have nice things too. Hammer has a large temper that he usually only has when white people disrespect him and his family. He is a good uncle and friend but his temper does get in the way. He is not a large part of the story, though he does represent the black familys anger.
Lillian Jean
Lillian is a stuck up white girl who believes she is better than everybody else. She walks all over cassie and acts like she and her family means nothing. Her father is exactly like her and even pushed cassie off the sidewalk because she bumped into Lillian. She is simple minded and is very gullible. Though her secrets are more important than a punishment for Cassie for beating her up.
Mr.Simms
He is a typical white man of back in the day. He believes he is everything and a black men should be treated as dirt. He has no respect for any of the Logans or any other black family. He is of a high rank and is a business owner. If he or his daughter is 'disrespected' in any way he takes the opportunity to as an excuse to bully and easily gets away with it because he is white.
The Wallaces
Those boys are nothing but trouble and its best not to get involved with them. They have done awful things including trying to shoot Papa, and breaking his leg all because they were afraid they would stop shopping at their store. Their methods are extreme and the wallaces are nothing but trouble.
