Controversial Issues
The segregation of the schools was a very big controversial issue is Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Throughout the chapters many issues come up with that. Mostly the time when the white bus drivers would purpsly drive on the side of the road where the puddles were and that caused the black kids to get sprayed with all the mucky rainwater. This caused quite a riot with Cassie and her brothers and they decided to stand up for their rights in a not so good way.
Mama loses her job was a big issue because after she lost her job the Logan family had to spend lots of time making extra money from getting fired. Pa had to plant more crops and hope for more cotton to grow even though cotton sales were down. But when Pa got shot in the leg that changed a lot of things because now he can't work on the railroad in the summer. By working on the railroad Pa made extra money for his family besides from the cotton. But now he can't even do that since his leg is in too poor and weak to do that.
The "Night men" are a big conflict in Roll of Thunder, Cassie has to face the fear of being caught by the night men if she ever left her house at night. The "night men" also known as the KKK are a group of mean white men that came on mostly at night and would burn black's house's down. Ma has to tell Cassie that she isn't allowed to go out at night, because she could get caught by the whites.
Lillian Jean is also a very big issue for Cassie. Lillian Jean is a stuck up, white girl living in the same area of Cassie. Cassie has to face being bullied, used, and being pushed around by her. One day, Cassie brings Lillian Jean down a path and she beats her up and makes her apologize for being mean to her, Cassie makes her promise she won't ever tell anyone or she threatened to tell the people Lillian's secrets.
